The Mental side of Fitness and Health (Part 1)

The mind is the most powerful tool we have in our bodies, yet, we spend countless hours training that right arm bicep just to lift a couple more kilos. Doesn’t really make much sense does it?

In my eyes big brands and certain people have given the Health & Fitness industry a bad name. The industry has been all about the looks for sometime now and not much emphasis has been put on the countless other benefits of it. For example; most magazines have a topless model with a six pack on their cover. In truth, most people will get jealous of that and want their body to look that way too .

Picture this. Magazine N°1 has a ripped model on the front cover and magazine N°2 has a front cover of an average healthy adult in good shape. You bought the first because you want to look ripped like the model and believe that this magazine will have all the tools to make that happen.

Let’s take a look at it from a different angle. In the first magazine although the model is ripped to shreds he is in fact unhappy, angry and stressed whilst the model from the second magazine is happy, motivated and stress free. Which one do you pick now? N°2? But you already bought N°1 because you wanted to look like that model on the front cover?

Of course we are assuming and many fitness models might in fact be very happy,  but it’s the concept of looking further than just the looks. My point being that first impressions are all good but they don’t always show you the true picture. How does that good old saying go, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. Fitness and Health is as much of a mental aspect as it is physical.

Interesting stuff right!

If the mind is able to stop you from seeing a dancing gorilla right in front of you, it can do most other things too. In the same way we exercise our muscles to become stronger or bigger we can work on improving our minds. When we exercise or practice an activity we strengthen our Neurological pathways, this is why we get better at playing football or  playing the guitar with practice. It is also why we get worse when we don’t practice! The same can be done with thoughts, so the more we think of a feeling or emotion the stronger it will get because we strengthen these pathways. So when people are always having negative thoughts it comes to no surprise that these will consistently pop in your head. The good news is you can get rid of them too but I will talk of that at a later stage.

In the meantime, be present in the moment. What do I mean by this? Well go make yourself a cup of tea and I will raise this topic in my next post.
